How To Train Your French Bulldog To Sit

French Bulldogs are beautiful dogs, and they are superb companions, but sometimes it can be a challenge to get them to sit down. With that said, getting any dog to sit down can be an almighty challenge.

However, one of the most critical elements for any dog owner is getting your dog to sit down from a young age. You will build obedience, respect, and discipline in your furry friend.

It doesn’t always have to be a challenge because there are many ways to encourage a french bulldog to sit down.

In this article, we will make it easier for you. Here are some straightforward steps.

Stand in front of your dog with their favorite treat

What is your French bulldog’s favorite treat? Whatever your Frenchie loves, use this as the training treat. Place your hand out and put the doggy treat in front of your dog. If at some point the dog starts to jump up, you should turn around.

When you turn around, you are withholding the dog from jumping up. After a while – and it might not work straight away – your dog will understand that jumping up is not allowed. You might have to do this ten times, or perhaps 50 times?

Eventually, your Frenchie will get the message and learn to sit down despite their favorite treat dangled in front of them.

Now place the dog’s treat in front of its nose.

The second you place a dog's treat in front of its nose, you tell the animal there is something great coming. Be sure to let your French bulldog have a good sniff so it's aware of the dog treat.

The dog might jump up and try to eat it, but remember, you should always turn around to give the dog the clear message that this is not okay.

Move the treat past the head and let the nose and stomach follow.

Now you should move the dog’s treat past its nose and behind the head. We all know how much a French bulldog loves its doggy treats, and its hungry nose will likely follow the doggy treat wherever.

Once the dog starts to follow the treat, the dog will have zero choices but to lower its rear as it follows the smell.

Moreover, keep pushing the treat past your French Bulldogs head until it entirely sits down. Eventually, the dog will have no choice but to place its rear on the floor.

Once the dog has sat down, say sit and give the treat

You’ll see the dog finally sit down, which is fantastic. So what should you do next? The next course of action is to shout “sit and give the dog its treat. You can say sit loudly to make sure the animal hears and understands the word.

After a while, your Frenchie will understand what the word sit means and will respond accordingly every time.

When you give the French bulldog the treat – you will help the dog understand the action, word, and reward process. Dog’s love rewards, so they will always respond to this.

Repeat the process as many times as possible

French bulldogs can get easily bored, and it is very typical. That’s why you should repeat the process as many times as possible with multiple dog treats. Some Frenchies may only need a couple of attempts to understand, and others will require repeated practice.

You should prepare yourself for 50 attempts. Whatever it takes, your dog will eventually understand the sit command. Once they do, your life will be much easier, and your dog will become more obedient in many other aspects.

Moreover, if the dog fails to sit down, you can gently push the rear until it touches the floor. Helping your dog now and again will not harm at all!

Final thoughts

Teaching a dog new tricks can sound daunting, and many owners will neglect dog training.

But, it doesn’t have to be complicated, and if you follow the above steps, you will have an obedient French Bulldog in no time!
